Facing Waves

Very strong waves from the raging Pacific Ocean right after an atmospheric river passed through. Atmospheric rivers are narrow and long plumes of water vapor that can transport tropical moisture across the ocean and cause extreme rain, flooding and even landslides in California. If you look at atmospheric rivers from space, they look like rivers in the sky and that's how they got their name. Strong winds that push the moisture across the ocean also create strong ocean waves, leading to perfect conditions for extreme surfers like this guy.

Asilomar

In February 2019, I had the pleasure of giving an invited talk at the PACLIM 2019. The past couple of years have been marked by extreme wildfires, heat waves, floods and droughts, and the theme for PACLIM 2019 was weather and climate extremes. The conference presentations covered a wide range of exciting topics on different types of weather extremes, climate dynamics behind extreme events and paleoclimatology of extremes (reconstructing past events). The conference was a great opportunity to interact with a number of amazing scientists who work in this area. The event was held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds on the Monterey Peninsula which is right on the beach. I made this sunset picture the night before the conference.

I have watched many sunsets in Southern California and in most of them, the Sun was obscured (at least partly) by marine layer or clouds shortly before setting. But here is a clear view of the setting Sun on the horizon taken from La Jolla, California. ⁣
