Alaskan Wetland
A vast stretch of wetlands in Alaska.
Under UNESCO’s leadership, 48 years ago the Convention on Wetlands (known as the Ramsar Convention) was signed in Ramsar, Iran. It was the first global multilateral and intergovernmental treaty devoted to conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. The Ramsar Convention still remains the only global treaty with a focus on wetland ecosystem. During the past five decades, some wetlands have been restored, but many more have degraded or disappeared. In the next fifty years, in addition to pollutants and other human-caused problems, sea level rise will be a major threat to many coastal wetlands.
